Man faces court over horror multi-vehicle crash

A man has faced court for the first time over a multi-car pile-up that claimed the life of a 61-year-old woman and seriously injured two others.

Police allege Joshua Fisher was driving dangerously and negligently before the crash on Eastwood’s First Avenue, in northwest Sydney, about 1.30pm on June 21, 2023.

Fisher is facing one charge of dangerous driving occasioning death and two counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.

The 32-year-old has also been charged with traffic offences alleging negligent driving occasioning death and grievous bodily harm.

During a brief mention in Burwood Local Court on Monday, Fisher sat silently as his matter was adjourned for another hearing next month.

He is yet to enter a plea to any of the charges and remains on bail.

At least six vehicles were involved in the pile-up, including a Mitsubishi SUV allegedly driven by Fisher, as well as a Holden Commodore, Kia SUV, Toyota sedan, Audi hatchback and a van.

The 61-year-old female passenger of the Holden, Swee Be-An Chew, was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

The driver and another passenger of the Holden, Lynette Kwong and Ann Wong who are both aged in their 60s, were taken to hospital in critical conditions.

Fisher was treated for a head injury at the scene and taken to hospital in a stable condition.

It took police close to a year after the crash to charge Fisher.

The matter will return to court on August 28.
