Wine originated from the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs.

A new study has revealed how the grape family thrived in the years following the extinction of the reptiles and indicated that the popular alcoholic tipple has its roots in the Earth-shattering meteorite.

Experts from the Field Museum in Chicago have discovered fossil grape seeds ranging in age from 19 to 60 million years old in Colombia, Panama and Peru – with one of the species being the earliest known example of the fruit in the Western Hemisphere.

Fabiany Herrera, lead author of the research, said: “These are the oldest grapes ever found in this part of the world, and they’re a few million years younger than the oldest ones ever found on the other side of the planet.

“This discovery is important because it shows that after the extinction of the dinosaurs, grapes really started to spread across the world.”
